Today we hear people say, “I have my truth and you have yours.” How can that possibly be true? I’m not talking about you having your favorite color and me having mine! I’m talking about spiritual matters – matters that have an eternal significance.
Two plus two equals four – that is truth. If someone tries to deny that, they are wrong.
That, I believe, is the problem – we don’t like being wrong, therefore we try to manipulate facts so that it appears that our denial of truth is really truth also. That cannot be!
The other problem that arises is when we know someone is wrong, and the issue is of Biblical concern. Too often we can be more concerned about wanting the approval of others, so we fail to point out the truth to them. We don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings, so we go along with them to keep things friendly, rather than speaking truth in love.
But God is not worried about those things. God wants to build our character, therefore, He points out the lies we believe so that we can repent and walk with Him in truth.
Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines truth as: “Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be.”
When we apply the above definition to the discussion on truth, we realize that facts are facts. Two plus two equals four – those are the facts. Math was designed by God.
God establishes the facts for all things, and truth is defined in His Word. When people reject His Word, they end up in trouble. That is what happened with the Israelites.
The history of the people of Israel is detailed in God’s Word. Their rejection of God led them to create their own standards, or what they might refer to as their own truth. The rejection of God through worship of idols and the mistreatment of their fellowman led to their debauchery. Eventually, they ended up going so far astray that there was no return. Judges 21:25 states it this way: “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”. Does that sound like the days we are living in?
The following verses send strong warnings for those who believe that God’s truth doesn’t matter:
Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
Proverbs 26:12: “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
Luke 16:15: “And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”
God’s Word is truth. It fits Webster’s definition: “exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be.”
Only God “is, has been and shall be”!
Psalm 90:2: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Revelation 1:8: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
God has the absolute authority to establish truth. We do not!
His truth will always prevail.
In Genesis 3:15 we learn that through Eve, God’s chosen offspring would come. He would prevail over the threat of Satan, and the lies Satan dispenses. Throughout the rest of the Old Testament we are given truth pointing us to the promised seed – Jesus. Satan would try to destroy God’s plan, by attempting to derail the nation of Israel from their call to make God known to the world.
But God and His plan would prevail. His plan would unfold at the right time!
Israel was exiled. The nation grumbled. But God saw to it that the nation was rebuilt. What looked impossible, was not impossible for God. Against all odds, Israel became a strong nation, after having fallen. That is unique! That is the truth and power of God.
Against all odds, Jesus came, He was tempted, but never succumbed to the enemy’s lies. Truth prevailed at the cross. Jesus clearly declared in John 14:6 that “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” God prevailed.
Satan continues to draw people away from the truth with his lies. But God has provided us with the Bible so that we can know the truth, and be set free from the judgment we all face because of our sinfulness.
One lie Satan attempts to spread is that all roads lead to heaven. Proponents of this lie are attempting to cause people to think that the truth in God’s Word is not all there is, that there are other truths regarding eternal life. They are wrong.
Another lie is that everyone will eventually end up in heaven, that in the end, God will forgive everyone. This is called universalism. It is a lie.
I can base my confidence in God’s Word being true in the fact that the Bible was written by over 40 different men. It was written over a period of 1,500 years, and from Genesis to Revelation it fits together perfectly.
I can also base my confidence in the reliability of the Bible because of the prophecies that were declared and then fulfilled hundreds of years later.
Archaeological discoveries provide further proof of the accuracy and reliability of the Bible.
I am confident in God’s Word being truth and completely accurate through the personal experience I had and continue to have with Him since I committed my life to Jesus in 1987.
God’s truth has and will always prevail, and one day, when Jesus returns, everyone will know that is a fact.
Philippians 2:5-11 declares this truth:
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
It is easy to deny the truth of God’s Word when you start to believe the lies of Satan, which are proclaimed by the world. Please, be careful to examine what you believe based upon what God’s Word tells us, and not what other sources promote.
When people fail to do this, we end up believing that we can all do what is right in our own eyes, and all will be well. That is a lie.
What are you basing your life on – God’s Word of truth or Satan’s lies perpetuated by people? What steps do you take each day to build your confidence in God and His Word?
